Crow is not really one to write, let alone write to someone, but something compels him to try. Or at the very least find a way to write out his frustrations. To say the things he could never say out loud or under the cold, judgmental stare of his mother.
A raven perches on a branch above him, waiting patiently for him to finish writing.
Dear Mother,
It's me, your son. I know to you I'm invisible, but I'm still here, very much still alive and able to hear the things you mumble under your breath. I can see your cold stares to my sister and she can see the ones you give to me. We are not blind to it. We can feel it in the depths of our psyche.
I know we weren't part of the plan. I know you prefer Scylla over us. I just wish you could tell us why. Why? Give us a good reason and I will stop asking. I will stop trying to care. I will stop trying to impress you because I know it won't change your mind. I just feel we deserve an answer.
Something.
Anything.
I will never be her. I can't not remind you of him. I did not ask to be made into this world, that was your doing. I know you seem to think it's your undoing, but it's time to put that behind you. I could be something if you let me. If you could just see me for who I am. I am not him, I am not her either. I am just Crow.

He stares at the page for a moment too long before finally giving it to the crow. As he asked of it, the crow takes flight to destroy the letter before it ever reaches the eyes of his mother.

There is no strife, no prejudice, no national conflict in outer space as yet. Its hazards are hostile to us all. Its conquest deserves the best of all mankind, and its opportunity for peaceful cooperation many never come again. But why, some say, the moon? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask why climb the highest mountain? Why, 35 years ago, fly the Atlantic? Why does Rice play Texas?
